The day Byron joined the Junior Psi Corp was a proud day for his parents...They gave him a party with all his favorite foods and a few friends. They were also tested by the corps and had joined up as well. The years passed and....

: : Byron excelled at all his studies, leaving teachers and classmates alike far behind. If only he wasn't so quiet and thoughtful, he would undoubtly be the best Psi Corp recruit since...

: : the one they spoke of in whispers, Bester. Bester was an enigma to most of the Corp. He seemed driven and yet was fiercely dedicated to the Corp. Ironically, it was Bester who had taken a personal interest in the young recruit and had guided his training from behind the scenes. This was the first time Bester had ever
: : shown such a strong professional interest in the younger recruits.

: : Back from an air drill, Byron removed his helmet, shaking out his long blonde hair, it had finally
: : grown back after being shorn off for PsiCorp Bootcamp (his mother had wept). Thinking about his mother, Byron's hand automatically went to the pendent, a family heirloom his mother had presented him when he was first selected for PsiCorp Officer training.

: : He used the pendent to focus his thoughts, especially when he was troubled, like now.....

: : He was in his quarters and started relaxing but couldn't seem to as he stared at the pendant trying to focus his thoughts. There were people that were fearful of him and his kind. His mind went back to one of the first times he'd tried to telepathically speak to a non-Telepath. She had been eating lunch with him and his mouth was full. She almost fainted when his thought burst into her mind. This was only one of the incidents that caused his mother to take him to the PsiCorp Training center to be tested...

: : With the Corp Byron was accepted, he had friends who understood the things he was going through - they were going through them too. He felt honored that Mr. Bester had personally taken him out an assignment with him. He had seemed pleased with Byron's work. It was hard to tell with Bester - sometimes he was warm and friendly and others cold and remote.

: : He thought about contacting his Dad, who always seemed to know the right thing to say, and talk over some of the reservations he had been struggling with. When his roommate, Dylan had proposed the idea of running away from Psi Corp he had been repulsed. He still was. He knew he should report Dylan but he was his best friend. They had gone through Psi Boot Camp together and the grueling experience had bonded them forever after that - he had thought. Now he was confused. He knew the Corps was where he belonged. They had saved him. He wasn't alone anymore. He had never disobeyed a regulation before but not reporting Dylan would have heavy consequences. Byron was torn....

: He remembered the first time he'd encountered a group of people who turned out to have been blips Bester had wanted to hunt down for retraining in the Corps. That was when he met Lydia... She was gifted with precognition and told him that he was going to grow beyond being in the Corps. He'd laughed it off at the time but still the thought haunted him as the moment after Bester had taken her from the cell she was in. The last thought she broadcasted Dylan and Byron had been sensitive enough to pick up...."We will all meet together in a better place...." The others who were in other cells suddenly started to cry or sing that song as a protest to let her know she was heard until the captured ones were rendered unconscious. The mothers of the group were allowed to stay conscious but were given telepathic suppressant shots.

: Byron stared at the pendant trying to focus his thoughts as he did when he wanted to center his thoughts. It didn't work this time. Suddenly he had seen a side of the Corp he had never imagined, no, he corrected himself, he had never allowed himself to see. The Corps is Mother, The Corps is Father. All of the sudden he wasn't sure that he wanted to go for Psi Cop anymore. And now with Dylan's planned defection he was even more confused. He needed someone to talk to; someone he could trust. It was then that reality hit him - there was NO ONE he could absolutely trust. His parents had tested low and been transferred to assignments on other worlds almost immediately on the family's joining. The Corp is Mother, The Corp is Father. Byron began to wonder...
