I'm an Army brat as well (although I don't know what branch your Dad was Snow) and we were stationed in the South for a few years. My grandfather also led the black military units during WWII. As a child racism never came up - many of my closest friends were and are black (I know that's a cliche) but as far as my and my friends' parents were concerned there was no need to discuss the colour of our friends's skins. Ironically, I think our parents may have learned from us.
Racism/prejudice is learned and is really just an excuse for white people to blame others for their own failures or bad luck. I think environment and upbringing are more important factors to how a person developes - the colour of a person's skin does not determine how a person will turn out.
I also believe all races, creeds, and cultures should be respected for they are important to our individuality and uniqueness.
All best - Anwenn

: it's a terrible thing....my parents are both from the south, and the one thing they taught me is NEVER judge a person by their skin color.
: As my father was in the military, i went to school and associated with kids from racially mixed families. some were black/asian, korean/white, and any other combination you can imagine.
: Jeffrey, this may sound strange, but i had no idea what the Klu Klux Klan was until the age of 10.
: maybe someday, we'll all be able to live with each other and not be so judgemental of our fellow human beings.
: okay, 'nuff said. i'm off the soapbox
: btw....Robin....are you still in one piece?
