Buy a can of an aerosol fogger type insecticide. Set it off just before leaving the house, stay out for several hours, and be ready to clean up and air out when you come home. Then -- and this is the important step -- get boric acid powder at the drug store. Put a thin trail of it in all the places the buggies like: under the sink, behind the furniture, all the way in the back of the cupboards, even under the rugs and lineoleum. It's poison to them, and they track it back to their nests. I did this when I moved to NYC and never saw another roach. Boric acid is toxic to pets though, (not to mention the fogger spray) so don't do it if you have furry creatures.
