You mistake my meaning slightly. As a long time user of Usenet I am well aware of the importance of allowing off-topic conversation to keep a group interesting and friendly. However I am also aware of the problems that can be caused by unecessary messages. For instance if it's the best way to do it then Jennie posting to the group to say she's in the chat room is okay, it's just one message after all. But when almost all the new messages are such and ther are so many I can only think it will put people off rather than make them want to read the group. Especially when we don't know when we'll get the archiving facility or if we ever will.
